Frequently Asked Questions
What is group therapy?
Group therapy is a setting where approximately 6-10 individuals meet face-to-face with a trained group therapist. During the group meeting time, members decide what they want to talk about with the guidance of the therapist.
Do I have to share or can I just sit and listen?
Each member is welcome to participate in whatever capacity they feel most comfortable. It is important to keep in mind that you are the one who determines how much you disclose in the group and you will not be forced to share your deepest and innermost thoughts. Although, research has shown those members who are actively participating i.e. giving and receiving feedback, sharing thoughts and feelings find the group most beneficial and satisfying.
Does what is said in the group, stay in the group or should I be concerned what is said in the group is shared with people outside the group?
At the beginning of group, members work cooperatively to establish guidelines outlining what they need to feel safe. Confidentiality is one of such guidelines. Group members are asked to refrain from sharing group content with individuals outside of the group. Members can share their own individual experiences with non-group members but are strongly encouraged to respect other group members need for confidentiality.
What if I can’t make it to all the group meetings?
It is important to make the group a priority and if at all possible, schedule other activities around the group meeting time. However, if another commitment conflicts with the group meeting time, it is advised that the member bring it to the groups attention allowing the group to set guidelines around attendance.
