Anger Management Group
The goal of the anger management group program is not to eliminate anger; rather the goal is to learn how to use anger as a signal that there exists an issue or problem that needs to be addressed. Individuals in the group learn how to slow down their arousal when angered so they can process and act in a proper way without negative consequences.
There is a strong emphasis in the group on understanding the relationship between thoughts and anger. When anger is intense our ability to think is hampered and we usually apply very illogical or unreasonable thinking and/or unhelpful thoughts about situations in which we find ourselves. We often have unreasonable expectations rather than preferences and turn them into “shoulds” and “musts.” The group members will learn to challenge their angry thinking, replace negative talk with positive and reasonable messages that are geared towards problem solving, and utilize relaxation techniques to slow down the anger arousal.
