BENEFITS OF FAMILY THERAPY
Family Therapy has a preventative impact. Therapeutic interventions at the family level are designed to enhance family functioning and thus disrupt potential intergenerational transmission of problems such as family violence, substance abuse, disrespect, and discouragement. Family counselling can help to improve communication, explore effective parenting strategies, help resolve parent-child conflict, gain or re-gain self-respect, create or reestablish familial connections, and recapture family joy.
The counsellors at the Centre for Cognitive & Behavioural Change want to help you create a happy, cooperative, and supportive family where:
- Members are able to be comfortable with both their loving feelings and their feelings of annoyance and frustration.
- Each member takes personal responsibility for his or her mixed, negative, and/or ambivalent thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
- Each member displays flexible responses to life events and are able to focus on their issues with goal-direction and clarity
- There is a deep sense of emotional security and a general belief “we can work it out” allowing conflicts to be resolved
- There is a sense of respect that the needs of the self, and the needs of the group, can be satisfied and resolved in a cooperative way
- Members refrain from using emotionally coercive tactics such as intimidation, guilt, disrespect, or discouragement
- Members share power and allow for the expression of a wide range of feelings and thoughts
- Differences are welcomed as enriching everyone
- Intimacy is safe
- Members are free to be both separate and connected
