ABOUT FAMILY COUNSELLING
Family therapy is a branch of psychotherapy that works with families and couples in intimate relationships to nurture change and development. Family therapy views family relationships and interactions as important factors in the psychological health of each member. Counsellors usually focus on relationship patterns, interactions and the maintenance and/or solving of problems rather than on analyzing impulses of the unconscious mind, childhood trauma, or who is to blame.
Family therapists help members learn to accept one another as being different, as having different needs, and to listen to one another. Teaching communication skills, developing cooperative rules for resolving conflicts, and managing anger in non-destructive ways are also essential components of family therapy. Therapists are often required to help parents understand the developmental stages of their children, to help adolescents understand their biological changes, to help couples understand their socializing into rigid gender roles that inhibit their relationship, and help the family to create a more satisfactory systemic state.
